With Children in MIND

Ultimately, my work and my vocation are to change the perception and delivery of Early Childhood Education in Canada beginning with Nova Scotia. Having worked for many years with children in a pre-primary setting, I have come to realize that if we are to effect change, I start with changing the MINDs and perceptions of adults...parents, programme directors, early childhood educators, politicians etc. There is a vast misunderstanding about the MINDs of children and what they are absorbing in the early years. I believe that during these formative years (0-5 years), we have a responsibility to offer our children the best environments and developmentally appropriate care that they deserve. It is the right of every child to have access to early childhood education and care. Every child is born with an intrinsic desire to learn and it should be our collective goal to nurture that potential in order for each child to reach optimal development.

Do you ever question why so many of our children are being labeled and diagnosed with behavioural conditions and learning disabilities? According to McCain, Mustard and Shankar (2007), “One-quarter of Canada’s children between birth and age six are experiencing some learning or behavioural difficulty. These problems in the early years have been shown to correlate with later difficulties in school performance, social adjustment and health.” I believe there are ways to prevent and mitigate these diagnoses. In the early years the child is an “unconscious learner” absorbing from their environment and developing in the social, emotional, physical and intellectual realms.
